Obituary of John F. Hamel

John F. Hamel, 80, of Oswego, passed away Monday, January 1, 2024. He was born July 26, 1943 in Oswego, New York to Frederick J. and Helen Hamel. John along with his wife Donna opened the Pizza Villa in Oswego in 1966. After several successful years, and the birth of their daughter Laurel and son Gregory, John helped found Ontario Business Machines, opening three locations throughout Central New York. His restless entrepreneurial spirit continued as he owned and operated telecommunication businesses in the City of Syracuse and Cleveland, Ohio, as well as medical billing companies out of Buffalo and Oswego. During his lengthy business travels throughout the years, John crossed paths and met many unique and famous individuals. Later in life, he preferred working outside the office walls, driving for Oswego County Opportunities and the Oswego School District. John was a proud U.S Navy Veteran, and he held a pilot’s license. He often enjoyed deep sea fishing and extended family vacations in South Florida. John also enjoyed walking the family dogs. His wry sense of humor and knack for detailed story telling were characteristics the people he met in life will not soon forget. His sage advice and caring nature as a father and husband is what his family will always remember. John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna; his children, Laurel (Scott) LaValley of Cicero and Gregory Hamel of Oswego; his sister; Helen A. Rossiter of Albany; his nephew, Brian Rossiter of Florida; his brother-in-law, David (Patty Hakel) Jaroszynski; nephew, John Jaroszynski and niece, Michelle Jaroszynski all of Jamestown. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a nephew, Scott Rossiter; his first son-in-law, Derek VanLoon; his brother-in-law, David Rossiter and by his sister-in-law, Barbara Jaroszynski.
